Rate: $16.00/ hour base + $2.30/ hour Hazard Pay ($18.30/hr)

Job Overview

 

Reporting to the Associate Director, the Overnight Shelter Chaperone, will provide nightly oversight for the overall Atascadero Winter Emergency Shelter provided by the El Camino Homeless Organization. The Overnight Shelter Chaperone will work closely with the Management Team, which includes the Associate Director, the Programs Coordinator and other appropriate staff, to maintain the shelter and meet the overnight needs of the ECHO clients.

We are looking for a person who has a can-do attitude, is passionate about engaging individuals experiencing homelessness and/or has experience with this population. We are looking for someone who can work overnights, 6:00pm – 2:30am and 11:00 pm – 7:30 am with some flexibility.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 

  1. Oversees activities and general operation at the Winter Shelter site during overnight hours.

  2. Checks in with previous shift staff and Chaperone Volunteers about what occurred during their shift.

  3. Evaluates the condition of the shelter premises nightly upon arrival for maintenance, upkeep or cleanliness. Will report the conditions of the shelter to the management staff.

  4. Responds to client’s needs and implements/goes over safety and social distancing checklist.

  5. Work with the management team to ensure that shelter chores are being completed by the residents.

  6. Assist residents with general requests and needs.

  7. Coordinate programs to ensure they are running efficiently and effectively.   

  8.  Ensures the safety of the residents, clients, volunteers, and shelter.

  9.  Other duties as assigned.

  1. Calm demeanor; Able to work under pressure; Able to respond to a crisis situation, health or safety issue and take appropriate and immediate action.  

  2. Excellent oral communication skills and the ability to interact with all departments/levels of the organization and outside third parties in a highly professional manner.

  3. Ability to work with diverse populations including those facing challenges in the areas of mental health, domestic violence, child welfare services and aging.

  4. Excellent time-management and organizational skills with the ability to work independently and take initiative.

  5. Able to maintain a high-level privacy and confidentiality of employees’, guests’ and clients’ information.

  6. Knowledge of universal precautions and what constitutes a medical or situational emergency.

  7. Understanding of mandated reporting laws.

  8. Must be professional, flexible, friendly, and work as a team player.

  9. Assume ownership for accomplishing assignments, requests and tasks.

  10. Intermediate knowledge of Office Suite, including WORD, EXCEL, and PowerPoint.

 

 

Education and/or Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent experience.

  • 1-2 years’ experience working for a non-profit.

Work Environment  

Variable work environment; work is conducted both indoors and outdoors with varying environmental conditions; door to indoor facilities often kept open, so warm clothing is required when working at night. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Noise level varies from quiet office environment to very noisy shelter and dining hall. Variable work environment; work is conducted mostly indoors.
